It ain’t always pretty.
Do you remember having a summer internship? Most likely, it wasn’t glamorous. Or terribly exciting. Or paid well, if at all.
But now that you’re older, wiser and further along in your career, you can hopefully appreciate those early work experiences. At least I know I can. This week, my younger daughter started a great opportunity as an intern at our vet’s office. This is a perfect fit for her, although it’s made me remember what those days were like.
You have to do the grunt work. You don’t have much say. There can be a lot of clock-watching.
But each job and each experience, no matter how small, is integral to our overall picture. If you’re lucky enough to spend time in industries you are passionate about, that’s a bonus. But the opportunity to learn is given to us at EVERY job we will ever have. Those horrible work situations? You know what you’ll never do again. Tasks that bored you to tears? Probably motivated you to learn new skills you enjoyed. The lesson is to learn all that we can, to then know how to make a living doing what we love.
