We all know it’s smart business to retain customers while attracting new ones. Less expensive, less work and all that. But do we always do what we should?
A few weeks ago I reached out to a list of dormant clients. There had been no ill-will or issues with them, even though I’ll admit I made up a story or two in my head about why we hadn’t worked together in a while. But deep down I knew things had gone well and maybe I had just fallen off their radar. And in most instances, I was correct.
The overwhelming number of clients I reached were quick to respond and appeared genuinely pleased to hear from me. This simple exercise of mine resulted in new work from dormant clients and opportunities to propose on future work. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. And it certainly paid off.
While you’re out there networking, meeting new contacts and marketing to bring in new business, remember to communicate with those you already know. Just because you haven’t heard from them in a while doesn’t mean there are not opportunities waiting for you. Top of mind is critical and timing is everything.
